We're trying to buy a car right now. On paper, it should be pretty straightforward - we know the make and model, mileage, year... Except when we started looking, it got complicated.

Firstly there are three different model options, all with a slightly different spec. Then the manufacturer changed what the options were called at some point in the past 12 months, so it's hard to compare. Then all the docs on the manufacturers website don't reference the older names at all, so you just have to guess how everything matches up...

But this isn't really about cars, is it. Your sales and product docs are often overlooked and (let's be honest) a little neglected. All your content efforts get focused on creating new content (often for marketing) that you forget to revisit the content that already exists.

But your sales content can miss the mark if it's highlighting old functionality (or features that never got shipped). And help centre content can be a huge source of frustration for existing customers if they're riddled with out-of-date product info, screenshots of menus that have changed, or walkthroughs that simply don't work anymore.
